The commitment was made on Tuesday during the opening ceremony of the NBA Enugu Branch 2024 Law Week, where the issue was highlighted in a lecture by human rights lawyer Daniel Ogbe, titled “Commercialisation of Policing in Enugu State: Implications on Human Rights.”

Chief Venatus Odo, Chairman of the NBA Enugu Branch, condemned the reported exploitation, which occurs when residents seek police assistance at various offices across the state. He stressed that such practices not only infringe on citizens’ rights but also disrupt the judicial process and legal practitioners’ work.

“We will officially engage with the police hierarchy in Enugu State to address this troubling trend and include this issue in our Law Week communiqué,” Odo stated.

Ogbe emphasized that the commercialization of police services poses a severe threat to societal stability and the integrity of the justice system. He urged legal professionals to initiate public interest lawsuits to challenge these practices and ensure the police act with fairness and accountability.

“It is crucial to deter police officers from becoming agents of injustice and regression in the Criminal Justice System. Such behavior undermines the protection of fundamental rights in Enugu State,” Ogbe remarked.

The NBA reiterated the importance of police dedication and commitment to public service, despite operational challenges, and vowed to restore the rights of Enugu residents.
