Abuja Crisis: Deadly Building Collapses Unleash Chaos And Life-Saving Rescues

Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, the Acting Director General of FEMD, made this announcement during a media briefing in Abuja yesterday.

According to Mohammed, the incidents took place at locations including Prince and Princess Estate, Guzape District, Garki 2, Kubwa, and Sabon Lugbe along Airport Road.

He highlighted that the primary incidents involved building collapses, fire outbreaks, flooding, and earth tremors, along with the distribution of relief supplies to affected individuals.

Providing an overview of the department’s activities over the past year, Mohammed stated that FEMD successfully saved 3,500 lives during various emergencies, responding to 165 calls made to its 112 emergency toll-free number.

He noted that among the Search and Rescue operations in 2024, 75 individuals were rescued from several flood disasters, although one life was tragically lost to flooding in Angwan Hakimi, Orozo, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council. To lessen the impact of the rains, FEMD barricaded the slip road at the Galadimawa interchange on June 25, reopening it on November 17.

In addition to the building collapse incidents that resulted in four fatalities, the department also reported that 1,230 individuals were rescued from various fire events without any casualties. Significant incidents occurred at Old Karu Market, a fitness center in Gwarinpa, and various residential fires.

Additionally, FEMD intervened in a potential suicide attempt atop a mast on Katampe Hill, ultimately preventing the incident through the skilled efforts of its officials and local police.

The agency also addressed concerns surrounding the recent earth tremor that affected residents in Mpape, Katampe, and parts of Maitama Extension, leaving over 2,000 individuals traumatized. A report on these incidents was submitted to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Lastly, FEMD attended to 89 victims of road crashes, regrettably resulting in three fatalities. The agency has launched its ember month campaign in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps, named Operation Eagle Eye, aimed at educating commercial drivers on safer driving practices throughout the FCT.
