Plateau Community In Mourning: Gunmen’s Brazen Assault Leaves 15 Dead Before Holidays

Jos— In the Gidan Ado community of Ganawuri, located in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, at least 15 individuals were killed in an armed attack, while others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment…READ MORE…

It is worth noting that a year ago, armed assailants disrupted Christmas celebrations in various communities within the Mangu, Barkin Ladi, and Bokkos Local Government Areas. In an effort to prevent a similar occurrence this year, local security agencies have been conducting meetings with community leaders and stakeholders to promote a peaceful holiday season.

Despite these precautionary measures, armed attackers targeted the community, which is primarily comprised of the Irigwe ethnic group from Bassa LGA, resulting in significant loss of life and damage to property.

While the state Police Command and Operation Safe Haven (OpSH) have not yet provided specifics regarding the incident, the Riyom council chairman, Sati Shuwa, confirmed the attack in a phone conversation with Vanguard. Attempts to reach Major Samson Zhakom, the spokesperson for OpSH, were unsuccessful, and Police spokesperson Alfred Alabo stated that an investigation is underway to determine the facts surrounding the event.

Chairman Shuwa remarked, “The community was attacked on Sunday night. Fifteen people were killed; we have just left the community. A mass burial has been conducted for the victims, and two survivors are receiving treatment in a hospital.”

Sam Jugo, the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), added, “The attack occurred on Sunday night at Ri Do (also known as Gidan Ado), a hamlet within Riyom LGA, predominantly inhabited by Irigwe natives from Bassa LGA.

“Our hearts ache for the loss of our kin, with whom we hoped to celebrate this holiday season, but whose lives were tragically cut short. May their souls rest in peace, and may God provide comfort to their families and the Irigwe community.
