Both judges were prominent figures in Iran’s judiciary, known for presiding over sensitive cases related to national security, espionage, and terrorism. Mohammad Moghisseh, 68, faced sanctions from the United States in 2019 for allegedly conducting unfair trials. Ali Razini, 71, had survived a 1998 assassination attempt involving a magnetic bomb.

Ongoing Investigation and Official Response

Authorities are investigating the incident, with several individuals already identified, summoned, or arrested in connection to the case. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and officials confirmed the gunman had no known ties to Supreme Court cases.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the killings, calling for a thorough investigation and decisive action. “I urge security and law enforcement forces to swiftly examine all aspects of this heinous act and identify those responsible,” he said in a statement.

Rise in High-Profile Attacks

Though attacks on judges are rare in Iran, the nation has seen an uptick in high-profile shootings in recent years. In 2023, prominent cleric Abbas Ali Soleimani was killed in a northern bank, and in 2005, judge Hassan Moghaddas was assassinated in Tehran.

This incident underscores growing concerns about security vulnerabilities involving prominent figures in Iran.
