The explosion occurred on Monday in Sabon-Pegi, Mashegu LGA, where the dynamites, allegedly kept in a residential area by one Yushau for supposed mining activities, detonated unexpectedly.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the state Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Danmamman, reported that the explosion claimed the life of Fatima Sadauki, injured six others who were rushed to the General Hospital in Kainji for treatment, and destroyed 12 residential buildings.
Danmamman said, “On January 26, 2025, at about 7:30 a.m., an explosion involving suspected dynamites occurred at Sabon-Pegi, Mashegu LGA. The explosives were reportedly stored in a residential area by one Yushau for purported mining purposes.
“The explosion resulted in the tragic death of one Fatima Sadauki, while six others sustained injuries and were taken to the General Hospital in Kainji for medical attention. About 12 houses were also affected by the incident.”
The police commissioner noted that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit has been dispatched to the site for further assessment. However, the suspect, Yushau, remains at large.
“Normalcy has been restored to the area, and monitoring is ongoing,” Danmamman added.
He emphasized the importance of community collaboration in preventing such incidents, urging residents to provide intelligence to law enforcement.
“If the community had reported the activities of the suspect or informed us about the dynamites, we could have intervened, prevented this tragedy, and secured the items,” he said.
Danmamman also encouraged citizens to be proactive in crime prevention, stating, “If you see something, say something. This is crucial for the safety of our communities.
