Speaking at the ‘National Dialogue on Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathway to Good Governance and Political Integrity’ on Monday in Abuja, Obi emphasized that democracy in Africa must evolve beyond symbolic elections to truly serve the people.

He argued that for democracy to thrive, it must operate on the foundational principles of accountability and transparency, with institutions that inspire public trust. According to Obi, governance can only succeed when the will of the people is respected and implemented.

Obi lamented that since the advent of the 4th republic in Nigeria, democracy has largely failed to meet the basic needs of its citizens, as poverty remains rampant. With around 100 million Nigerians living in extreme poverty and 150 million facing multidimensional poverty, he warned that democracy is losing its significance if it cannot address critical issues such as healthcare, education, and poverty reduction.

The former Anambra State governor called for a deep reflection on the nation’s democratic practices. He stressed the importance of strengthening institutions and ensuring that governance truly benefits the people.

“For Nigeria to achieve a functional democracy, we must prioritize building institutions that ensure accountability, justice, and fairness,” he said. He also emphasized the need to empower the youth and encourage active citizenship to hold leaders accountable.

Obi concluded by calling for a stronger commitment to democracy, warning that as democratic systems weaken globally and coups rise across Africa, the success of democracy depends on trust, strong institutions, and a genuine dedication to improving the lives of the people.
