Top 5 Countries With The Highest Skin Bleaching Rates
The skin bleaching industry has grown into a multi-billion-dollar market worldwide, with millions using products to lighten their complexion, especially in Nigeria, where such products are often labeled as “organic” soaps and creams.
Despite repeated warnings, including Nigerian music legend Fela Kuti’s satirical Afrobeat song Yellow Fever, which criticized the practice, skin bleaching remains widespread.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, has also raised concerns over the increasing use of skin-lightening products in Nigeria.
A World Bank analysis of 68 studies found that individuals aged 30 and under have the highest skin bleaching prevalence at 55.9%, followed by those aged 31-49 at 25.9%.
Here are the top five countries with the highest skin bleaching rates, according to a recent WHO study:
1. Nigeria
Nigeria has one of the world’s highest skin bleaching rates, with over 77% of users regularly purchasing these products despite bans and warnings about their harmful effects. Many still seek out these products, often marketed as “organic” skincare.
2. Congo-Brazzaville
In Congo-Brazzaville, over 66% of women use skin bleaching products, influenced by societal beauty standards that favor lighter skin. Despite the risks of skin cancer and organ damage, the demand remains high.
3. Senegal
An estimated 50% of the population in Senegal engages in skin bleaching, driven by societal acceptance and cultural influences. The practice remains widespread despite growing awareness of its dangers.
4. Ghana
Approximately 39% of Ghanaians use skin-lightening products due to social, economic, and peer pressure factors. Despite government regulations and public health campaigns, demand for these products remains strong.
5. South Africa
About 32% of Black South Africans engage in skin bleaching, largely influenced by colorism. Many believe that having lighter skin leads to greater societal acceptance and more opportunities.
Despite warnings from governments and health experts, Fela’s message still rings true—many skin-lightening products contain harmful chemicals that can cause severe skin damage, organ failure, and even cancer.
