Labour Party Facing Deep Crisis – Tony Nwulu
Former Deputy Governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Imo State, Tony Chinedu Nwulu, has likened the party’s ongoing leadership crisis to a terminal illness, suggesting that a resolution is unlikely anytime soon…READ MORE…
Nwulu, who recently resigned from the LP due to internal conflicts, revealed in an exclusive interview with Naija News that external forces are fueling the turmoil within the party. He emphasized that while the Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee is making efforts to salvage the situation, the party’s challenges have reached a critical stage.
“I wouldn’t say Nenadi Usman’s committee is not doing the right job, but the Labour Party is already in a stage 4 crisis. They are merely trying to contain the damage, but the decay runs too deep,” Nwulu stated.
He acknowledged Usman’s leadership capabilities but likened the party’s predicament to a patient battling an advanced-stage illness, where any intervention may be too little, too late.
According to Nwulu, the party’s troubles date back to the tenure of former National Chairman Julius Abure, with hidden forces manipulating events from behind the scenes.
“The crisis in the Labour Party didn’t start today. It began under Abure’s leadership. The current committee is only trying to intervene, but multiple layers of damage have already been done,” he added.
When asked about his next political move, Nwulu revealed that he is in discussions with multiple parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), but has yet to make a final decision.
He further argued that Nigeria’s political parties generally have strong ideologies but are often weakened by poor leadership and internal struggles.
“The real problem isn’t the party itself but the individuals leading it. A party is like a school or a hospital—the difference lies in the quality of the people managing it,” he explained.
As the crisis within the Labour Party deepens, the uncertainty surrounding its future continues to grow, with key figures like Nwulu opting to exit rather than remain in the embattled party.
