Man Remanded In Custody For Allegedly Severing Wife Hand In Enugu

Echeji was arraigned on January 31, 2025, facing charges of attempted murder under Section 275, Subsection A of the Criminal Code CAP 30, Vol. 1 of the Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2024.

The gruesome attack, which occurred in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka Local Government Area, has sparked widespread condemnation. Due to the severity of the charges, the Chief Magistrate Court transferred the case to the State Department of Public Prosecution, citing jurisdictional limitations.

Echeji has been remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Centre pending trial at the State High Court, according to a statement from the Office of the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah.

In her statement, the First Lady strongly denounced the act, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to eradicating gender-based violence.

“This level of brutality will not be tolerated. Our administration is dedicated to ensuring justice is served. Anyone who commits such a barbaric act will face the full weight of the law,” the statement read.

The Enugu State Government has intensified efforts to protect women and girls, strengthen legal frameworks, and support survivors of domestic abuse.

Civil society organizations and law enforcement agencies are working together to set a strong precedent against domestic violence, reinforcing the state’s zero-tolerance policy on such crimes.
