Osun Workers Ordered To Abandon Duty! NLC Raises Alarm Over Safety Concerns

The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its members working in local government areas across the state to withdraw their services starting Monday.

The NLC expressed alarm over the escalating tension, which has created anxiety and fear among its members in local government offices.

Governor Ademola Adeleke recently accused his predecessor of conspiring to incite unrest by using security chiefs to reinstate local government chairmen and councillors who were elected in the October 15, 2022, poll.

In response, Osun APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, urging Adeleke to seek redress in the Supreme Court rather than resort to blackmailing former governor Gboyega Oyetola, who currently serves as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.

Speaking on the matter, NLC Chairman Arapasopo stressed that while the organization remains nonpartisan, it will not allow its members to operate in an insecure environment.

“The NLC is not a political body, but we cannot allow our members to work under unsafe conditions,” Arapasopo said.

“We urge all political parties and their supporters to respect the rule of law to prevent a slide into chaos. In light of the current situation, we are directing all our members working in Osun State local government offices to withdraw their services effective Monday, February 17, 2025, from midnight.”

He further stated that workers will not return to duty until their safety is guaranteed, emphasizing that it is their constitutional right to work in a secure environment.

The NLC also called on security agencies to take urgent steps to ensure the safety of lives and property in local government areas across Osun State.

The directive from the labor union adds another dimension to the ongoing political standoff between Governor Adeleke and the opposition, raising concerns about potential disruptions in governance and public services in the state.
