Kogi State Government Implements Security Measures Amid Rising Insecurity

The Kogi State government has announced stringent security measures following the killing of two individuals and rising security threats in certain areas of the state. As part of these measures, the government has banned rallies, fishing activities, and the unauthorized use of security convoys.

Following a meeting with traditional rulers and security agencies, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, stated that the government is committed to safeguarding lives and property while maintaining peace and security across the state.

Suspension of Fishing Activities and Public Gatherings

Fanwo disclosed that in light of credible intelligence reports, the government deemed it necessary to implement proactive measures to prevent security breaches. He noted that although the state experienced a peaceful Sallah celebration, security concerns have since emerged, particularly in Kasemiya, Katubo, and Umozu Ette communities, all located in Kogi Local Government Area. Fishing activities in these areas have led to violent confrontations, resulting in two fatalities.

As a precautionary measure, all fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area have been suspended until peace is fully restored. Security operatives have been deployed to affected areas to enforce the directive and maintain order.

Similarly, in Ankpa Local Government Area, tensions have escalated following a communal clash between the Ika-Odele and Ika-Ochala communities in Enjema District. The state government has dispatched security personnel to prevent further violence, while ongoing peace negotiations between the two communities continue under the government’s mediation.

Ban on Rallies and Security Convoys

In Kogi Central, intelligence reports suggest that some individuals are planning violent rallies disguised as political or religious gatherings. To curb potential unrest, the state government has imposed a complete ban on all forms of rallies or public assemblies that could compromise public peace.

Furthermore, the government has directed that any individual or group entering the state with a security convoy must obtain prior clearance from the relevant security command. This measure aims to prevent unauthorized movement of armed personnel, as intelligence indicates attempts by individuals to enter the state under the guise of security operatives to incite violence.

Leadership Engagement and Community Responsibility

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo recently met with the leadership of the Kogi State Traditional Council, led by the Attah of Igala, Matthew Opaluwa Alaji, to strategize on maintaining peace. The traditional leaders praised the governor’s proactive measures to ensure public safety.

Additionally, the governor has instructed all Local Government Chairmen to take charge of security within their respective areas. Community leaders and influencers are also urged to educate residents on the importance of maintaining peace and supporting the government’s efforts to deliver democracy dividends.

To guarantee full compliance with these measures, the governor has tasked the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (Rtd), with coordinating security enforcement in collaboration with other security agencies. Security forces are on high alert to forestall any potential breach of law and order.

The Kogi State Government has urged all residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies. The government reassures the public that safeguarding the lives and well-being of its citizens remains a top priority, and any attempt to disrupt the peace will be met with decisive legal action.
