Top opposition figures in Nigeria have reportedly concluded talks on forming a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

According to a Bloomberg report published on Wednesday, discussions involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), have reached a resolution after months of behind-the-scenes negotiations.

Sources familiar with the talks revealed that the leaders have agreed to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the political platform for the coalition’s presidential campaign. These sources, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, did not disclose details about the presidential candidate or any power-sharing arrangement.

Spokespersons for the PDP and Labour Party confirmed that while their respective candidates are free to engage in coalition talks, the negotiations do not involve a merger of the parties.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has stated that his participation in the coalition is driven by the urgent need to combat bad governance, hunger, and poverty in the country.

In response to reports of a possible one-term agreement with Atiku Abubakar, under which Obi would serve as Vice President, Obi declined to confirm or deny such a deal. The report, citing multiple sources who spoke with Punch, noted that the proposal was discussed earlier this year during a meeting between Atiku and Obi in the United Kingdom, with Atiku allegedly agreeing to serve only a single four-year term.

Speaking at an Anglican Church-organized event in Kubwa on Monday—where he made a donation to a school and hospital project—Peter Obi emphasized his commitment to the coalition’s broader goals without confirming the specific political arrangement.
