Buhari’s Ex-Chief Of Staff: Those Who Gain Most From Nigeria Give Least
A former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari, has expressed concern that individuals who gain the most from Nigeria often contribute the least to its governance and development.
Gambari made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, reflecting on his three-year tenure in Buhari’s administration, which he said provided him with deep insight into the country’s political dynamics.
He lamented that many who seek power are unwilling to make the sacrifices necessary for responsible leadership. “What is shocking is that I have seen the possibilities of that office, of the presidency. But I have also seen how those who benefitted most from what this country has to offer are the least committed to its stability, progress, and development,” Gambari said.
He added that governance requires fairness, justice, and a national outlook that transcends ethnic or religious interests. “Some of these issues weigh heavily on me, but the opportunities for change are there. However, with experience, you also come to understand the limitations involved in bringing about rapid change,” he explained.
Gambari, who previously served as a minister during Buhari’s military regime in the 1980s, was appointed Chief of Staff in 2020 following the death of Abba Kyari. On his reappointment, Gambari credited Buhari’s loyalty to individuals who had contributed to his earlier development. “I must say this, which is not often giving credit to Buhari, that he is loyal to a fault to people he felt had made a contribution to his development at his earlier success. Nobody mentioned my name but he said go and bring me Gambari,” he noted.
