Nollywood In Mourning As Veteran Actress Passes Away

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actress, Oby Kechere, widely remembered for her role as Madam Koi Koi in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa. According to Ireporter Online, news of her passing was confirmed on Saturday by the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, Uche Agbo, who disclosed that the actress died on Monday, April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued by the guild, Kechere, who served as Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter, was described as a dedicated professional whose contributions significantly impacted the growth and unity of the association. The guild expressed deep sorrow over her passing, extending condolences to her family, colleagues, and members of the Abuja chapter while praying for the peaceful repose of her soul.

The late actress, a native of Mbaise in Imo State, studied Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan before joining Nollywood in 2001. She featured in several productions, including the popular August Meeting film series, but rose to wider prominence for her comedic performance in Aki na Ukwa, which endeared her to audiences across the country.

Her colleagues have continued to pay tribute, remembering her as a passionate and committed figure in the industry whose legacy will endure.
