According to Ireporter Online, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has explained that his approval of the recent reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is aimed at strengthening the capacity of young Nigerians through practical skills acquisition and better preparing them for meaningful contributions to national development.

Tinubu made the clarification in a statement shared on his verified account on Wednesday, following the Federal Executive Council’s approval of the NYSC reforms on Monday.

The President described the initiative as the most significant overhaul of the NYSC scheme since its establishment in 1973, noting that it reflects his administration’s broader commitment to expanding opportunities for Nigerian youths.

He stated that from the outset of his administration, he pledged to prioritise young people and women, adding that the newly approved reforms form part of efforts to fulfil that promise.

Tinubu further acknowledged the NYSC’s long-standing role in fostering national unity over the past 53 years but stressed that evolving national realities now require the scheme to go beyond its traditional objectives.

He explained that the reforms are designed to reposition the corps scheme to better serve both participants and the nation, with increased focus on productivity, entrepreneurship, and practical skills development in line with current economic demands.
