13 Killed, Several Injured In Tragic Road Accident In Kogi
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a devastating road accident in Kogi State resulting in the loss of 13 lives and injuries to several others. According to Samuel Oyedeji, the Sector Commander of the Kogi FRSC, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday…..READ ALSO Fatal Road Accident: Truck Collides With Motorcycle, Leaving Three Dead In Lagos
The accident involved a commercial Sharon bus and an articulated cement truck and took place at Obajana Market along Obajana-Lokoja Road in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State. Oyedeji explained that the Sharon bus had stopped behind a truck near the market for passengers to make purchases when the cement truck, having lost its brakes, collided with it from behind.
Tragically, the impact caused the bus to burst into flames, engulfing most of the passengers onboard. Additionally, two trucks and a motorcycle were also consumed by the fire. The bus was reportedly en route to Abuja from the southern part of the country.
Despite efforts by rescue teams comprising personnel from the FRSC, Red Cross Nigeria, and the police, the intensity of the fire hindered their ability to save many lives. The charred remains of the victims were recovered from the scene, while two injured individuals were rushed to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, for medical treatment.
Oyedeji expressed concern over the lack of willingness by hospitals in Kogi to accept the charred bodies for preservation, potentially necessitating a mass burial if no relatives come forward. He described the incident as “very sad and unfortunate,” urging motorists to avoid overspeeding and ensure proper vehicle maintenance before embarking on journeys to prevent such tragic accidents.
