15,000 Doctors Exit Nigeria Over Insufficient Salaries
Abdurrahman Ali, Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association’s Kano State chapter, has raised alarm over the exodus of 15,000 doctors from Nigeria in 2024, citing insufficient compensation as the main reason. As part of this year’s Physician Week, themed “Ensuring Universal Applicability in Remuneration: A Panacea to Talent Retention in the Healthcare System,” Ali highlighted the necessity of fair pay and recognition for doctors’ efforts.
“Fair remuneration goes beyond just salary; it acknowledges our worth. It serves as a motivator for excellence and helps prevent burnout, especially in the healthcare sector,” he stated.
“Adequate compensation reflects the time, emotional investment, and personal dedication that healthcare professionals contribute. When healthcare workers are respected and compensated fairly, it enhances their commitment to patient care and strengthens the overall healthcare system,” he added.
Ali also called on the Kano state government to fulfill its agreement with the Nigeria Medical Association regarding the revised hazard allowance for health workers.
“I urge the Kano State government to honor the agreement signed with the NMA for the implementation of the revised hazard allowance. This will help bridge the gap between state and federal doctors and reduce the troubling trend of brain drain,” he concluded.
