2027: Akpabio Assures Campaigns Won’t Disrupt Legislative Duties

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election will not interfere with the legislative responsibilities of members of the National Assembly.

According to Ireporter Online, Akpabio made the clarification while speaking with journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Senate President recently convened a meeting of All Progressives Congress critical stakeholders in Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, where President Bola Tinubu, Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno received endorsements for another term in office in 2027.

Akpabio explained that electioneering activities and legislative responsibilities are separate commitments, stressing that lawmakers would continue to perform their constitutional duties despite the approaching campaign season.

He noted that members of the National Assembly belong to different political parties and would therefore not be required to participate in campaign activities at the same time.

According to him, campaign schedules can be arranged for afternoons and evenings, allowing lawmakers to dedicate their mornings to legislative business.

Akpabio stressed that lawmakers were elected to serve for four years and must balance their political activities with their responsibilities to Nigerians.

He assured the public that legislative activities would continue without interruption, with the National Assembly remaining focused on making laws and addressing the needs of citizens.

The Senate President maintained that previous campaign periods had not prevented the parliament from carrying out its duties and expressed confidence that the same would apply as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
