2027 Will Be a Coronation, Not an Election’ — Lukman

Former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has warned that the 2027 general election could become more of a coronation than a competitive contest if opposition parties fail to put aside personal ambitions and unite behind a common candidate.

According to Ireporter Online, Lukman made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he argued that the continued division among opposition parties is strengthening the ruling APC’s position ahead of the next general election.

He maintained that Nigerians do not require opinion polls to understand the country’s current economic situation, insisting that the hardship facing citizens is evident in their everyday experiences.

Lukman said the prevailing economic challenges have left many Nigerians struggling, adding that the country’s situation has not improved in a way that reflects the expectations of the people.

The former APC chieftain also blamed the opposition for failing to build a united front capable of presenting a strong challenge to the ruling party, warning that the lack of cohesion has contributed to what he described as the APC’s growing confidence.

He expressed concern that continued disunity among opposition leaders could further erode public confidence in the electoral process, leading to increased voter apathy and creating the perception that election outcomes are predetermined.

According to Lukman, if Nigerians lose faith in the credibility of the electoral process, participation in the polls could decline significantly, making the 2027 election appear more like a formal endorsement than a genuine democratic contest.

He therefore urged opposition leaders to place Nigeria’s national interest above individual political ambitions by engaging in meaningful negotiations and presenting a single, credible presidential candidate capable of attracting broad national support.

Lukman stressed that only a united opposition would be able to offer Nigerians a viable alternative and ensure that the 2027 general election remains competitive and reflective of the people’s democratic choice.
