Agena announced the agency’s ambitious target to generate over N16 billion in revenue for the year 2024, following the successful surpassing of its N14 billion target in 2023.
Addressing journalists on Monday, Agena expressed concern over the activities of illegal tax collectors, noting that many of them enjoyed support from influential figures.
He emphasized that his administration at the BIRS aimed to eradicate the era of political patronage, with the goal of significantly reducing illegal tax collection activities.
Agena also condemned a recent incident in which a truck carrying palliatives from Adamawa to Anambra State was hijacked by youths in Aliade, Gwer East.
He revealed that three suspects had been apprehended in connection with the incident.
“A truck was intercepted, the driver assaulted, and the vehicle’s windscreen shattered, with over N200,000 stolen.
“Three individuals have been arrested and are currently in police custody. They will be transferred to the Department of State Services (DSS) for thorough investigation.
“We are determined to eradicate or minimize illegal tax collection activities. Already, 35 individuals engaged in illegal tax collection have been arrested and are facing prosecution.
“This has been a significant challenge. We have established a team led by the Director of Tax Collection to address this issue. Some prominent individuals in the state are implicated in encouraging these individuals,” he explained.
