6 Ways To Detect Fake Naira Note

The Central Bank of Nigeria issued a warning on Friday, alerting Nigerians to exercise caution regarding counterfeit naira notes circulating in response to reports of a currency shortage in the country.

In a statement titled ‘Beware of Counterfeit Naira Banknotes in Circulation,’ the apex bank urged Deposit Money Banks, Financial Houses, Bureau de Change, and the public to remain vigilant and implement necessary precautions.

To help identify fake naira notes, the Central Bank highlighted six key features:

1. Engraved Portrait: The portrait of Nnamdi Azikiwe on the new ₦500 note is carved into the surface, with the image painted or sketched on the right side for easy identification of authenticity.
2. Optically Viable Ink (OVI): OVI security ink reflects light differently when viewed at an angle, changing color and transparency. For example, the OVI in the new naira notes shifts from blue to green with a change in the viewing angle.
3. Portrait Watermark: The watermark on the new naira notes is in portrait form and is a transparent feature superimposed onto the photograph.
4. Kinegram: The Kinegram, featuring an image of the Nigerian Coat of Arms, is a reliable identification and security feature found in the original new ₦1000 note.
5. Intaglio: Involves incising the image on the naira note into a surface, with the incised lines or sunken areas holding the ink.
6. Iridescent Band: A symbol at the top of the new ₦1000 note changes when viewed from different angles, providing an additional security feature.
