Court Orders Obaseki To Explain Delay In Appointment Of Judges

In Abuja, a Federal High Court has issued an order directing Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, to explain the reasons for the delay or refusal in administering the oath of office to eight Judges-designate of the Edo State High Court.

The National Judicial Council recommended the appointment of these eight judges in June 2023, yet the governor has not sworn them in.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the situation, an individual named Adaze Emwanta filed a lawsuit against the Governor of Edo State, the state Attorney General, and the National Judicial Council in a case identified as FHC/ABJ/1634/2023.

In response to the case, the presiding judge, Justice O. A. Egwuatu, has mandated the governor to provide justifications for the delay and show cause as to why the applicant’s requests should not be granted.
