A Tennessee zoo has welcomed a striking new addition to its collection, a flawless and unblemished superstar. Although she hasn’t been named yet, this giraffe has quickly become a sensation within her group due to her distinct lack of patches.

Born without spots on July 31 at Bright’s Zoo, a privately-owned establishment in Limestone, this 6-foot wonder has recently made her public debut.

Belonging to the reticulated giraffe species, one of four types of giraffes, she has captured attention as potentially the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe in existence anywhere on Earth.

The last documented spotless giraffe in captivity was likely a calf born at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo back in 1972, as reported by CBS News.

The term “reticulated” pertains to the network of polygonal brown spots on giraffes, interspersed with creamy off-white veins. These distinctive markings serve primarily as camouflage in their natural habitat of the northern Kenyan savannas, where they roam and graze.

Underneath each spot lies a complex system of blood vessels, as detailed by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and growth of the wild giraffe population in Africa. Maintaining the world’s tallest land mammal and keeping it on its feet requires an extensive network of blood vessels and hearts weighing around 25 pounds.

According to Tony Bright, the founder of the zoo, the newborn calf is drawing vital attention to giraffe conservation efforts. Approximately 16,000 reticulated giraffes remain in the wild, marking a 50% decrease over the past 35 years from an estimated 36,000 individuals in the wild on the continent.

This latest addition joins an expanding herd at Bright’s Zoo, arriving shortly after another baby giraffe. Under the watchful care of her attentive mother and the zoo’s human staff, she is reportedly thriving. Now, the only thing she lacks is a name. Fans have the opportunity to vote on four potential names, with “Kipekee,” meaning “unique” in Swahili, being a fitting choice for this exceedingly rare baby giraffe. The winning name will be unveiled on Labor Day.
