India’s Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is currently descending towards the moon’s surface in anticipation of a groundbreaking landing endeavor, capturing mesmerizing visuals during its journey.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) verified on Tuesday that Chandrayaan-3 is adhering to its timetable and is progressing without any hitches.

The spacecraft is scheduled to commence its ultimate descent towards the lunar surface on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. IST (8:15 a.m. ET).

Should this mission achieve success, it will signify the inaugural gentle touchdown on the moon by an Indian spacecraft, positioning India as the fourth nation ever to achieve this remarkable feat. Presently, only the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union have managed controlled landings of spacecraft on the moon.

India’s space agency plans to broadcast the landing endeavor live, starting at 5:20 p.m. IST (7:50 a.m. ET) on Wednesday.

On the eve of Chandrayaan-3’s landing, the ISRO released photos and footage captured by the spacecraft’s cameras. One striking aerial image of the moon, taken from an altitude of 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) above the lunar surface, showcased features like Mare Marginis – a prominent dark spot resulting from ancient asteroid impacts on the far edge of the moon’s visible side.

Another snapshot, captured on August 20 while the spacecraft was in close proximity to the moon, provided a detailed view of the moon’s dusty gray landscape.

The spacecraft is capable of orienting itself by comparing the images captured by its cameras with a preloaded lunar map stored in its onboard computer, as specified by the space agency.

Chandrayaan, a term derived from Sanskrit meaning “moon vehicle,” was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, situated in India’s southern Andhra Pradesh state, on July 14. The spacecraft has been steadily and systematically approaching the lunar surface.

This undertaking represents India’s second endeavor to achieve a gentle moon landing. The initial effort, undertaken in 2019 with Chandrayaan-2, concluded in a crash due to software problems and challenges with braking during its descent.
