AGF Warns NLC: Planned Protest Is A Contempt Of Court
In a stern warning to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has declared the union’s proposed nationwide protest as a contempt of court…..READ ALSO Falana Calls For Transparency: AGF Urged To Disclose Monthly Allocations To States And LGs
The NLC had announced plans for a nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28, citing economic challenges facing the country. However, Fagbemi reminded the NLC of a subsisting court order restraining them from any industrial action.
In a letter addressed to the NLC’s counsel, Femi Falana (SAN), Fagbemi emphasized that the proposed protest violates an interim injunctive order granted by the National Industrial Court. He stressed that resorting to public protests over issues already before the court amounts to contempt and undermines the judiciary.
Fagbemi highlighted that the government had substantially met the demands outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding with the NLC, urging the union to engage more with the government for full implementation.
He concluded by urging the NLC to refrain from self-help by shelving the proposed protests, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and maintaining public order and safety.
