Ambassadorial Appointments Delayed As Nigeria Faces $1bn Financial Shortage
President Bola Tinubu is spending part of his holiday in Lagos, reviewing the final list of nominees for Nigeria’s new ambassadors to various countries and international organizations. This comes after sources close to the President confirmed that the appointment process…Ambassadorial Appointments Delayed As Nigeria Faces $1bn Financial Shortage
has begun.
However, the process has faced significant delays due to a lack of funds needed to clear arrears owed to foreign service officials, cover the costs of aging embassy vehicles, and address the poor condition of embassy buildings. A source noted that nearly $1 billion is required to resolve these financial challenges.
Since taking office in May 2023, President Tinubu reevaluated Nigeria’s foreign policy and recalled 83 ambassadors in September 2023. These missions, which include 109 diplomatic posts globally, have been without senior envoys for over a year, raising concerns about Nigeria’s international presence and reputation.
Despite earlier expectations that the list of nominees would be finalized by the end of December, new updates suggest that the announcement may now occur in January. Officials say the list is ready for review, with background checks and security clearances pending before it is sent to the Senate for approval.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, confirmed that financial constraints were a significant reason for the delay, emphasizing that without adequate funding for embassies and missions abroad, appointing ambassadors would be impractical.
To address this, experts and foreign service officials indicate that the funding required for critical infrastructure improvements and unpaid allowances for foreign service officers amounts to nearly $1 billion. Many of Nigeria’s embassies are in disrepair, with outdated vehicles and crumbling buildings that need urgent attention.
As the country waits for new appointments, experts warn that the continued absence of senior envoys could negatively impact Nigeria’s diplomatic relations and influence on the global stage.
