The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has praised the courage of an unidentified man who recorded a video of a kidnap operation as it unfolded on Friday morning in Awka.

The widely circulated footage captured armed men in a silver Toyota Highlander forcefully abducting their victim and firing sporadically into the air, causing chaos in the area. Vehicles were seen swerving to avoid stray bullets while pedestrians fled in panic.

According to local sources, the victim was reportedly returning home after dropping off his children at school when he was kidnapped.

CP Orutugu, in a statement issued by the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, commended the individual who documented the crime, noting that the video is already assisting law enforcement efforts to locate and rescue the victim.

“The men, who operated in a stainless-coloured Highlander without a number plate, shot indiscriminately and abducted an unsuspecting victim on the morning of June 27, 2025, in Awka,” the statement said.

The police chief stressed that the footage demonstrates how community involvement can significantly support security operations.

“The command is leveraging the video to identify the suspects, gather critical evidence, and pursue their arrest,” Ikenga added.
