Speculation arose following El-Rufai’s recent visits to the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja and his association with Abdul Ningi, a Senator suspended over allegations of budget padding. These actions triggered debates online, with suggestions that the former governor might be contemplating a political move.

However, Shehu Gabam, the national chair of the SDP, downplayed the significance of El-Rufai’s visit to the party’s secretariat. Gabam emphasized his longstanding relationship with El-Rufai and stated that visits from politicians, including those from other parties, are not uncommon. He urged against reading political motives into the visits, emphasizing that El-Rufai’s involvement in the formation of the APC underscores his political significance.
