APRI Warns Against Fuel Scooping, Highlights Deadly Consequences

The Accident Prevention and Rescue Initiative (APRI) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians about the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers. The organization’s Executive Director, Amb. Fidelis Nnadi, condemned the practice, calling it “suicidal” and lamenting the widespread ignorance of its risks. The Suleja explosion, which claimed nearly 100 lives, highlights the recurring dangers of fuel scooping in Nigeria. This incident follows similar tragedies, including an October 17, 2024, tanker explosion in Jigawa State that resulted in over 150 fatalities as people rushed to collect spilled fuel. Other deadly occurrences have been recorded in Enugu, Anambra, and other states, underscoring the urgent need for preventive measures.

Amb. Nnadi dismissed the argument that economic hardship drives people to engage in fuel scooping, emphasizing that no financial struggle justifies risking one’s life. He warned that beyond the immediate danger of explosions, the practice also poses long-term health risks, environmental damage, and severe injuries.

To address this issue, he urged the government to establish firefighting stations and emergency response units at 20-kilometer intervals along major highways. He also expressed APRI’s readiness to collaborate with authorities to educate citizens on the risks associated with fuel scooping. Furthermore, he called on security agencies to hold tanker owners accountable for employing reckless drivers and advocated for legislative measures restricting the daytime movement of vehicles transporting highly inflammable products.
