Atiku’s Criticism Of $2.2bn Loan Rejected: Arewa Group Calls For Constructive Debate

The Arewa Professionals for Democracy and Development (APDD) has responded to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s comments regarding the recent approval of a $2.2 billion foreign loan for President Bola Tinubu by the National Assembly..……READ MORE

The group has urged Atiku, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, to focus on constructive criticism rather than making baseless assumptions. APDD condemned Atiku’s suggestion that the loan could be mismanaged or embezzled, stating that such remarks failed to reflect a true understanding of economic management.

In their statement, signed by APDD President Engineer Moses Odaudu, the group pointed out that the loan, if properly managed, could stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and enhance public services. The group accused Atiku of trivializing the purpose of the loan and ignoring the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability.

APDD also noted that Atiku’s criticisms regarding exchange rates and poorly negotiated terms overlooked the complexities of international finance and the ongoing efforts to improve revenue collection through agencies like the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Customs.

Additionally, the group criticized Atiku’s reference to Nigeria’s exit from foreign debt under the Obasanjo administration, suggesting he omitted key details about his involvement. They also insinuated that Atiku’s repeated electoral defeats and advancing age may impair his ability to contribute meaningfully to national discourse, advising him to step back from politics.

APDD concluded by emphasizing that while it is essential to scrutinize government decisions, it is equally important to consider the broader context and potential benefits of such loans.
