Israel Adesanya Teases Early Retirement, Reveals What’s Next For His Career

This fight marked his return after a surprising decision defeat to Sean Strickland the previous year.

In a candid conversation on the FLAGRANT Podcast, Adesanya reflected on his career achievements, stating, “Many fighters never even make it to the UFC or win a belt, but I’ve done it twice. I’m proud to be the only two-time UFC Middleweight Champion.” Though he doesn’t have a scheduled fight at the moment, there’s speculation about a potential matchup with Nassourdine Imavov at UFC Saudi Arabia next year.

Despite still having goals within the sport, Adesanya recognizes the physical toll fighting takes on athletes. “You have to break up with fighting before fighting breaks up with you,” he shared.

When discussing his future in the UFC, Adesanya, who is now 35, admitted that he may only have about three years left in the sport. “I don’t want to be fighting at 40,” he remarked. While uncertain about when exactly he will retire, he finds pride in his accomplishments, particularly his two reigns as Middleweight Champion. “If what I’ve already achieved doesn’t bring me happiness, what will?” he mused. “I’m happy, but I’m not content.”
