Defamation Case: Katsina Analyst Granted ₦500,000 Bail By Court

According to Ireporter Online, Kurfi, a former lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, is standing trial on two counts bordering on defamation of character and injurious falsehood.

The charges, filed under Sections 308 and 309(1) of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State, stem from comments he allegedly made during an interview aired by Trust TV on June 24, 2026.

The prosecution accused the analyst of claiming during the interview that the Katsina State Government sponsored some bandit leaders to embark on the Hajj pilgrimage.

The state argued that the allegation was false, malicious and capable of damaging the reputation of the government and the people of Katsina State.

During the latest court sitting, the prosecution informed the court that investigations into the matter had been concluded and that the state was ready to proceed with the trial.

Following the development, counsel to the defendant, A.D. Umar, renewed his application for bail, arguing that Kurfi should be allowed to remain on bail pending the conclusion of the case.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Zaharaddeen Sani granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties.

The court ordered that the sureties must be property owners within Katsina metropolis and warned that each would forfeit ₦500,000 to the state if Kurfi fails to appear in court whenever required.

The matter was subsequently adjourned until August 13, 2026, for the commencement of hearing.

Speaking after the proceedings, Umar expressed optimism that the legal process would vindicate his client, adding that the defence team was fully prepared to present its case when the trial begins.
