Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, announced this achievement in a statement on Saturday.

According to the findings from Spotify’s 2024 Wrapped, Ayra Starr topped the list of the ten most streamed female artists in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya.

In Nigeria, the top ten most streamed artists are: Ayra Starr, Tems, Qing Madi, Billie Eilish, SZA, Tiwa Savage, Bloody Civilian, Rihanna, Simi, and FAVE. In Ghana, the list includes: Ayra Starr, Tems, SZA, Gyakie, Rihanna, Adele, Qing Madi, Tiwa Savage, Nicki Minaj, and Beyoncé. For Kenya, the top ten features: Ayra Starr, SZA, Rihanna, Tems, Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, and Beyoncé. Meanwhile, South Africa’s top streamed artists include: Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, SZA, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Nkosazana Daughter, Babalwa M, Ariana Grande, Summer Walker, and Nicki Minaj.

Okumu highlighted the significant achievements of female artists, stating that they are breaking barriers and contributing to a more inclusive and diverse future for African music. She noted that artists, fans, and creators have made 2024 a record-breaking year filled with cultural impact, particularly through genres like Afrobeats and Amapiano.

“The impact of Nigerian female stars cannot be overlooked in Sub-Saharan Africa,” she stated, praising Ayra Starr for her successful album “The Year I Turned 21,” her global tour, and her bold fashion choices. With her soulful blend of Afropop and R&B, she has claimed the title of the most streamed female artist in her home country, Ghana, and Kenya.

In Ghana, the local talent Gyakie ranked as the fourth most streamed artist in her country, while Tems secured the second position in Nigeria and Ghana and fourth in Kenya. Following Ayra Starr and Tems in Nigeria are Tiwa Savage, Bloody Civilian, and Spotify EQUAL artists Qing Madi, Simi, and FAVE.

On the Spotify EQUAL Africa Initiative, Okumu shared that it’s a global effort aimed at promoting equity and amplifying women’s voices through playlists and promotional activities. Over four years, nearly 200 EQUAL ambassadors have been supported by the program. South African artist Tyla emerged as the leading EQUAL artist in Africa, followed by names like Ayra Starr, Amaarae, Qing Madi, FAVE, Simi, Gyakie, Yemi Alade, Makhadzi, and Teni.

“Female artists play a vital role in expanding the reach of Afrobeats in 2024,” Okumu emphasized. Among their notable achievements is Tems, a multi-award winner who has collaborated with renowned artists like Rihanna and Beyoncé and performed at the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. Her song “Love Me Jeje” made it to No. 20 on the Rolling Stone Top 100 Song List for 2024.

Tyla, another emerging star, excelled at the 2024 BET awards, winning multiple accolades and earning three nominations for the 2024 MTV EMAs. Her album, “TYLA,” also made it into the top ten in several countries, including Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Samoa, Tanzania, Uganda, Barbados, and Jamaica.

While Spotify celebrates the achievements of Africa’s women artists, Okumu noted that more work remains to ensure greater representation of these influential creators in the top charts.
