Benue Bloodshed: Bandits Strike, Claiming Lives, Including soldier

Tragedy struck Benue State over the weekend as suspected bandits launched deadly attacks in communities across Kwande and Apa Local Government Areas, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake.

Reports indicate that the violence unfolded between Saturday and Sunday, with areas like Udedeku community of Maav-Ya, Mkoonmom District, Mbaikyor Council Ward, Turan Jato-Aka, and Ochumekwu bearing the brunt of the onslaught.

In Kwande, the bandits descended upon Udedeku community, unleashing terror and claiming the lives of several residents. Shockingly, some locals are still unaccounted for, adding to the anguish of the affected community.

Confirming the grim events, Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of Operations Whirl Stroke, revealed that soldiers deployed in Ochumekwu, Apa LGA, were ambushed by armed bandits. Tragically, one soldier lost his life, while another sustained injuries in the cowardly attack.

In a swift response, the troops engaged the assailants, resulting in the neutralization of three bandits and the recovery of weapons. However, the toll of the violence continues to mount, underscoring the urgent need for decisive action to restore peace and security to the region.

While the OPWS Commander noted ongoing efforts to root out armed foreign bandits in Kwande, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, acknowledged the forest invasion but stated no official reports of casualties had been received.

As the communities reel from the brutality inflicted by these criminal elements, calls for enhanced security measures and concerted efforts to combat banditry resonate louder than ever, as Benue mourns the lives lost in these senseless acts of violence.
