Gambaryan and his colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla, were apprehended in Nigeria in February on suspicion of involvement in money laundering activities. While charges were brought against the firm and its employees, including allegations of money laundering totaling $35,400,000, Anjarwalla managed to evade custody and flee the country.
The Nigerian government, led by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has initiated discussions with INTERPOL regarding the extradition of Anjarwalla, who absconded from detention and left Nigeria on March 22.
In its statement, Binance emphasized Gambaryan’s background as a law enforcement professional committed to upholding good governance and transparent regulatory financial practices. The company urged that Gambaryan, who lacks decision-making power within Binance, not be held accountable while discussions between Binance and Nigerian government officials are ongoing.
Binance highlighted Gambaryan’s past contributions to global law enforcement efforts, including collaboration with United States agencies in freezing and seizing over $2.2 billion worth of assets, and conducting workshops for Nigerian EFCC officials on financial crime compliance.
