Borno APC Gov Candidate’s Convoy Attacked By Boko Haram

The convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, came under attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters along the Kareto-Damasak axis on Thursday.

According to Ireporter Online, the incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. as Gubio and members of his political team were travelling towards Damasak, the headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area.

Gubio was reportedly on a tour of northern Borno to appreciate APC members following his emergence as the party’s consensus governorship candidate.

A member of the entourage said the convoy came under heavy attack, with the suspected insurgents allegedly firing rocket-propelled grenades and sporadic gunshots.

The source said the attack created a tense situation but was repelled by security personnel attached to the convoy.

Personnel from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilantes were reportedly involved in the response.

Although some security vehicles were damaged during the confrontation, no member of the convoy was reportedly killed or injured.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, also confirmed the incident, stating that police tactical operatives engaged the suspected terrorists after the convoy came under an improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenade attack.

According to Iniedu, the security team forced the attackers to retreat into the surrounding bush before conducting a sweep of the area to address possible secondary explosive threats.

He added that the convoy, which included the governorship candidate, government officials and political stakeholders, was successfully evacuated to a secure location without any casualties.

The latest incident highlights the continuing security concerns along parts of northern Borno, where attacks by suspected insurgents have remained a challenge for residents, travellers and political actors.
