BREAKING: Eddie Howe Leaves Newcastle United

The decision came after a series of talks between Howe and senior club officials over the past 48 hours, although the 47-year-old had reportedly been reflecting on his future for several weeks before the final agreement was reached.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his position, Howe continued preparations for Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 23 before his departure was confirmed.

His exit comes during a challenging period for the club, with Newcastle having approved the departures of key players including Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. Captain Bruno Guimaraes has also attracted interest from Arsenal, while striker Alexander Isak left the club last summer in a British-record £125 million move to Liverpool.

The player departures are believed to have influenced Howe’s decision as he assessed Newcastle’s ambitions ahead of the new season. Although he remained confident the club could continue progressing, he reportedly wanted significant reinforcements to strengthen the squad.

Newcastle have added young talents to their ranks this summer, including winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim in a £42 million deal, midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for £23 million, and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims for £18.5 million. However, missing out on Johan Manzambi, who chose Aston Villa instead, created further frustration during the transfer window.

Howe leaves Newcastle with a strong legacy after transforming the club following his appointment in November 2021. He guided the Magpies away from relegation danger before turning them into consistent European contenders.

His biggest achievement came in 2025 when Newcastle won the Carabao Cup, ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. He also secured Champions League football on two occasions through impressive Premier League finishes and helped the club achieve its best run in Europe’s elite competition in recent years.

However, the previous campaign proved difficult, with Newcastle finishing 12th in the Premier League and suffering an 8-3 aggregate defeat against Barcelona in the Champions League last 16. Defeats against local rivals Sunderland also increased pressure around the team.

Howe’s final game in charge ended with a disappointing 4-1 pre-season defeat to Championship side Bristol City before his departure was finalised.

Reports indicate that Howe informed Newcastle of his desire to take a break from football, leading both parties to agree on a mutual separation.

The club has already begun searching for his replacement, with sporting director Ross Wilson and chief executive David Hopkinson overseeing the process. Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle has reportedly emerged as a leading candidate, with the German coach admired for his attacking style and high-intensity approach.
