BREAKING: Edo Assembly Gets New Speaker After Agbebaku’s Dramatic Exit
Yekini Idiaye, the lawmaker representing Akoko Edo Constituency I, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku.
According to Ireporter Online, Idiaye was elected Speaker during Monday’s plenary after Agbebaku formally resigned from the position amid reported tensions within the legislature.
The sitting was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonye Atu, who informed lawmakers of Agbebaku’s resignation letter.
Following the announcement, the member representing Esan South East Constituency, Sunday Ojiezele, nominated Idiaye for the position of Speaker. His nomination was seconded by Eric Okaka, representing Owan East Constituency.
The Clerk of the House subsequently administered the oath of office on Idiaye, who immediately assumed his new position as Speaker of the Eighth Assembly.
The House also approved changes to the leadership of the majority caucus following a letter from the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ojiezele was named the new Majority Leader, while Ojie Inegbebor, representing Igueben Constituency, emerged as Deputy Majority Leader.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) nominated Natasha Osawaru as the new Minority Leader, a move which was also approved by the lawmakers.
The leadership changes come shortly after Agbebaku resigned as Speaker amid reported moves by some lawmakers to remove him from office.
Agbebaku had previously suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other principal officers of the House.
With Idiaye now taking over as Speaker and new principal officers emerging, the latest developments mark a significant change in the leadership structure of the Edo State House of Assembly.
