Addressing the media, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Mrs. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, revealed the distressing situation, emphasizing the gravity of the matter. With immediate effect, the orphanage was shut down, pending a thorough investigation into the allegations.
Benjamins-Laniyi disclosed that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had authorized the Secretariat to conduct comprehensive profiling and recertification of all orphanages operating within the nation’s capital. This proactive measure underscores the administration’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable children and ensuring the integrity of orphanage operations.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Benjamins-Laniyi noted the involvement of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in the ongoing investigation. Furthermore, plans are underway to reunite the rescued children with their families in Plateau State, in collaboration with the Plateau State Government.
The Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Caroline Dafur, provided harrowing details of the children’s ordeal, describing their appalling living conditions and the abandonment they endured. She expressed dismay at the deplorable state of the orphanage, condemning the neglect and mistreatment of the children.
The collaborative efforts between the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat and the Plateau State Government resulted in the swift evacuation of the children to the Karu Children’s Home, providing them with a safe haven away from the horrors they experienced.
This decisive intervention serves as a stark reminder of the imperative to prioritize the welfare and protection of vulnerable members of society. As investigations continue and accountability is pursued, authorities remain resolute in their commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the well-being of every child under their care.
