Breaking: Iwere Forum Chief Warns NNPC: Avoid Niger Delta-Crisis
Chief Omolubi Newuwumi, Chairman of the Iwere Forum and a Chief in the Warri Kingdom, has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to refrain from implementing policies that could escalate the crisis in the Niger Delta region.
Newuwumi expressed concern about NNPCL’s approach to awarding pipeline surveillance contracts, accusing the organization of prioritizing the interests of certain individuals over peace in the region.

In a statement released to Vanguard, he voiced his displeasure over the continuous threats directed at surveillance organizations associated with the Itsekiri ethnic group, stating that such actions were unjust.
The statement reads: “There has been an understanding between the Delta State government and the two ethnic groups, Ijaw and Itsekiri, that under no circumstance should any group be favored at the expense of the other. This agreement has helped maintain harmony between the two ethnic groups for over two decades.
“Chief Omolubi expressed his frustration over the ongoing threats to the surveillance firm associated with the Itsekiri community to favor another firm allegedly linked to an individual of Ijaw descent. Notably, the surveillance firm linked to the Itsekiri community has consistently met expectations in fulfilling its tasks.
“He appealed to NNPCL officials to explore alternative options and create equal opportunities to accommodate those they seek to favor, without deliberately disadvantaging any individual or surveillance firm associated with the Itsekiri or Ijaw communities.
“In my opinion, the top priority for the federal government and NNPCL should be to significantly increase oil production from the current 1.2 million barrels per day to 2 million barrels per day or higher. This objective must take precedence over any actions that could potentially sow discord among ethnic communities in the Warri area.
