Breaking: Kenneth Okonkwo Reveals Why He Resigns From Labour Party

In his statement, Okonkwo expressed deep dissatisfaction with the party’s current structure, stating that the LP, in its present form, lacks the capability to influence Nigeria’s political future. He criticized the party for failing to conduct congresses at the ward level, elect local and state executives, or hold a national convention, describing the leadership as focused on personal gain rather than the party’s survival.

“The Labour Party is non-existent as presently constituted. The National Chairman, Julius Abure, appears more interested in the survival of his pocket than the party itself,” Okonkwo stated.

Okonkwo also highlighted that the LP had not held constitutionally mandated congresses at the ward, local government, or state levels, rendering the tenure of these executives expired. He accused Abure and his associates of launching unnecessary legal battles against the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee, effectively paralyzing efforts to revive the party.

Okonkwo further noted that the LP’s inability to position itself as a viable political force ahead of the 2027 elections, especially with its internal crisis and lack of strategic leadership, prompted his decision to leave. He warned southern presidential aspirants against relying on the Abure-led LP, implying that the leadership may be covertly supporting the ruling party.

“I have never been double-faced in my life. My entrance into politics is for good governance, and this aim can no longer be realized within the Labour Party as presently constituted,” Okonkwo concluded.

His resignation will take full effect on February 25, 2025, after which he plans to join other like-minded Nigerians in pursuing good governance for the country.
