Petroleum Shake-Up: Oil Marketers Vow To Source Fuel From Any Supplier (See Reasons)
Oil marketers under the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) have clarified that they are not exclusively loyal to any refinery, including Dangote Refinery or government-owned facilities like Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries.…..READ MORE
Billy Gillis-Harry, PETROAN President, emphasized that their primary goal is to secure petroleum products from diverse, credible suppliers to maintain availability and affordability for Nigerians.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Gillis-Harry highlighted PETROAN’s support for a competitive and non-monopolistic market structure. He reaffirmed the association’s long-standing relationship with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other key industry stakeholders.
“PETROAN is focused on ensuring product availability and affordability, as outlined in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). We discourage any monopolistic tendencies and advocate for an open market where everyone can participate freely. Even fuel importation isn’t a crime—it’s provided for under the PIA. However, as patriotic Nigerians, we believe in strengthening our internal market to boost the economy,” Gillis-Harry stated.
Addressing concerns about a potential monopoly by Dangote Refinery, which surfaced in November 2024, Gillis-Harry dismissed such fears, assuring that the market remains diverse with refiners, depot owners, and retailers fulfilling their respective roles.
“We are not worried about Dangote or any other refinery creating a monopoly. The market is open, and all players—from refiners to depot owners to retailers—continue to meet consumer demands. We’ll keep advising that each segment of the value chain focuses on its responsibilities,” he explained.
Gillis-Harry reiterated that PETROAN members are committed to sourcing petroleum products from multiple suppliers rather than aligning with a specific refinery.
“Our members lift products from every credible source. Our loyalty lies in ensuring product availability wherever possible. We’ve had a longstanding bulk purchase agreement with NNPCL, and we continue to benefit from that relationship. Additionally, we source from Dangote Refinery, which remains a credible supplier, and we have established a Dangote-MRS-PETROAN partnership. Once procurement processes are completed, our members promptly lift products from any available source,” he concluded.
