Breaking: Lagos Assembly Clashes With IGP Over State Police Stand
The Lagos State House of Assembly has taken a firm stance against the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, regarding his opposition to the establishment of state police. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the Clerk of the House to convey the lawmakers’ rejection of Egbetokun’s position to him and the National Assembly…..READ ALSO Lagos Assembly Voices Concern As Naira Plummets To N1,534 per Dollar
IGP Egbetokun had recently argued against the creation of state police, expressing concerns about potential ethnic tension and divided loyalty. Instead, he proposed merging the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps with the police force.
However, Speaker Obasa disagreed with this proposal, stating that merging agencies would not effectively address issues like road accidents and pipeline vandalism. He highlighted the continuous support of Lagos State to the police through the Security Trust Fund but noted that crime remains a persistent challenge.
Obasa emphasized that establishing state police, as seen in other countries like the UK and the US, would enhance crime prevention and solution. He urged the National Assembly to pursue constitutional amendments to enable the creation of state police.
Lawmakers supported the Speaker’s position, arguing that the current police structure is insufficient for securing the country. They emphasized the necessity and practicality of state police, especially considering the existence of local security outfits in many states.
