Dr. Nnamdi Ijeh, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, conveyed this directive in a condolence message addressed to the families affected by the boat accident, which claimed the life of Nollywood actor Junior Pope and four crew members.
Ijeh’s statement, released to the press in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday, April 15, expressed the government’s condolences and solidarity with the creative community impacted by the incident. The message emphasized the importance of safety measures in preventing such tragedies.
In the letter, dated April 11, 2024, Ijeh highlighted the necessity for life jackets and other safety equipment during water travel, particularly in the entertainment industry. He stressed that the few survivors of the boat accident were wearing life jackets, underscoring the critical role of such precautions in saving lives.
He stated, “It is therefore very expedient that, at this time of grief, to say that henceforth, such journeys should not be embarked upon without life jackets, expert divers, and other safety precautions.”
Moreover, Ijeh reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens, issuing a stern warning against undertaking water journeys without the required safety gear.
As Delta State mourns the loss of lives in this tragic incident, the implementation of this mandatory life jacket policy reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding individuals traveling on its waterways, particularly those within the entertainment industry.
