Akin Sawyerr, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELF), revealed this decision, emphasizing its role in preventing loan diversion.
Sawyerr further outlined that loan recipients would be required to commence repayment two years following the completion of their National Youth Service Corps obligations. This decision, he emphasized, was made during a meeting with Chris Maiyaki, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, held in Abuja.
Sources of funding for the NELF were detailed, including allocations from Federal Government profits, taxes, and levies, among others. Additionally, the Education Loan would be bolstered by donations, gifts, and revenue from various sources.
However, not all stakeholders are in favor of the proposed scheme. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), particularly the chapter at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, vehemently opposes the initiative. According to Prof. Pius Mogaji, the Chairman of ASUU FUTA, the scheme is perceived as a tactic to deprive public universities of essential funding, potentially burdening students with perpetual debt and hindering access to education for indigent Nigerians.
The debate over the student loan scheme continues, highlighting the complexities surrounding educational financing in Nigeria.
