In response to mounting concerns over its adverse effects on public health and the environment, the state government declared its intention to ban the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics earlier this year.

As part of the enforcement measures, authorities will seize and confiscate any Styrofoam items found in shops and eateries throughout Lagos. The move comes after a three-week grace period granted to Styrofoam users to transition to more sustainable alternatives.

While the ban has been met with some resistance from stakeholders citing potential business disruptions, the government remains resolute in its commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices. Some food vendors have already begun using nylon bags as an alternative packaging solution, highlighting the need for accessible and affordable alternatives to Styrofoam.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Wahab, emphasized the importance of prioritizing environmental cleanliness and urged market leaders to cooperate with enforcement efforts. He underscored the government’s determination to address unsanitary conditions in markets and reiterated the need for traders to comply with waste management regulations.

Furthermore, Wahab warned against trading activities on railway lines, citing safety concerns and emphasizing the imminent commissioning of the Red Rail line. He urged traders to prioritize safety and environmental responsibility in their business practices, stressing the importance of collaboration between government agencies and market stakeholders.

As Lagos takes proactive steps towards environmental sustainability, the enforcement of the Styrofoam ban signals a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to build a greener, healthier future for its residents.
