ECOWAS leaders, meeting in Abuja, announced that any easing of punitive measures against Niger depended on a “short transition” period. They appointed a committee, consisting of the presidents of Benin, Togo, and Sierra Leone, to negotiate with Nigerien military leaders on the commitments to be implemented.
Niger is currently “suspended from all decision-making bodies” of ECOWAS until constitutional order is re-established, as declared on Thursday.
The military leaders in Niger have indicated a desire for up to three years for the transition back to civilian rule since the coup. In the aftermath, Niger has scaled back security cooperation with Western partners and expelled French troops stationed in the country.
