BREAKING: Resident Doctors Embark On Indefinite Strike

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced an indefinite and comprehensive strike action. The decision was conveyed through a brief statement on Tuesday evening.

Among their demands are immediate payment of the 2023 MRTF, prompt release of the circular on one-for-one replacement, and settling the payment of skipping arrears. Additionally, they seek an upward review of CONMESS in line with restoring full salary to the 2014 value, clearing arrears of consequential adjustment of minimum wage for omitted doctors, and reversing the downgrading of the membership certificate by MDCN.

Other requests include payment of MRTF, new hazard allowance, skipping, and implementation of corrected CONMESS in State Tertiary Health Institutions, along with the payment of omitted hazard allowance arrears.

The strike was prompted by the association’s issuance of a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government on July 5, urging them to fulfill all the demands.

Efforts were made to prevent the strike, with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, conducting closed-door discussions with NARD’s leadership on Monday. Following these talks, Abbas assured that he would meet with President Bola Tinubu to prevent the resident doctors’ industrial action. He also announced the formation of an ad hoc committee to engage with all stakeholders and address the issues at hand.

The Speaker appealed to NARD, requesting a two-week window for the house leadership to work towards resolving the raised concerns.
