In a militant attack in southwestern Niger, at least seven soldiers lost their lives on Thursday. Additionally, five others perished in a traffic accident while attempting to respond to the assault, as stated by the country’s defense minister.

The assault occurred roughly 190 km (118 miles) from the capital Niamey in Kandadji, near the tri-border area of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which has been known as a hideout for militants.

Defense Minister Salifou Mody reported that “a military unit was violently attacked by several hundred terrorists in the town of Kandadji.” He confirmed that seven soldiers lost their lives in the battle, while another five met their demise in a traffic accident while attempting to react to the attack.

In the course of an intervention launched in response to the attack, he noted, “a tragic traffic accident led to the loss of five of our brave soldiers.”

The defense minister added that many terrorists, along with their motorcycles and weapons, were eradicated about 20 km northeast of Ayorou in the same region. A search and sweep operation has been initiated to locate the enemy.

It’s worth noting that Niger’s elected government was overthrown in late July in a military coup, with leaders justifying the action by citing the deteriorating security situation in the West African country.
