CAF Shuts Down 2027 AFCON Format Change Rumours
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has dismissed reports suggesting that the format of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) would be altered, reaffirming that the continental tournament will continue with its existing 24-team structure.
According to Ireporter Online, CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe clarified the issue during a press conference on Wednesday, confirming that 24 national teams will compete in the 2027 edition of Africa’s premier football tournament.
The football governing body further reinforced the clarification in a statement published on its official X account on Thursday, describing reports of a possible change in the number of participating teams as inaccurate.
CAF emphasized that no decision has been taken to modify the tournament format, maintaining that the 24-team competition remains unchanged despite widespread speculation.
The organization also announced that the qualification series for the 2027 AFCON is expected to commence between September and October 2026, while the finals are scheduled to take place in June and July 2027.
The tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, marking a historic collaboration among the three East African nations as they prepare to stage one of Africa’s biggest sporting events.
With the clarification, CAF has effectively ended speculation surrounding the tournament’s structure, confirming that the 2027 AFCON will proceed under the established 24-team format while participating nations gear up for the qualification campaign later in 2026.
